Member of the Month Spotlight ⭐️

⭐️ October 2022: Arthur Murphy!!!!! ⭐️

Where did you grow up?

Boxboro, Mass.

What do you do when you are not at the gym?

I spend time with family and friends. I mostly hang with my dog Charlie.  I also do a lot of mountain hikes up North.

What was your fitness regime before joining NDB Fitness?

Resting  on the couch. When I got ambitious, I would roll to the other side. 

When did you become a member at NDB Fitness?

June of 2022. My Wife told me about NDB and thought it would be the perfect place for me to join. As always, she was right!

What about the gym keeps you coming?

The classes are well structured with a variety of exercises.  All the  instructors (Leila, Joanne, Frank, Krista, and Janice) are fantastic!! They are knowledgeable, very supportive and just genuinely nice people. The fellow members are awesome. Everyone is nice, even at 5:30 am, and supportive.  There’s no “I lift things up and put things down,” meatheads  at NDB.

What is your favorite workout/movement?

I’m a big fan of the Child’s pose! 😃 I’m beginning to like burpees. I truly enjoy all the classes offered, Bootcamp, Cardio Kickboxing and Pilates.

What is your least favorite workout/movement?

Alligator crawl. I have a hard time with that and look like an idiot.

What is one thing you have done at the gym that you never thought you would/could?

A  plank into a side plank while raising an arm to the ceiling.

What is your next fitness related goal?

Prep for the Spartan race in November and some road races. Lose 10 more  pounds, gain overall strength and endurance for hiking. A year ago, I had some physical ailments and was going to quit hiking. Since joining NDB, I was able to hike up 11 mountain peaks with no physical limitations. I was able to enjoy the hike from beginning to end.

What motivates you during a workout?

The music gets you pumped up! Exercises are fun when you’re  ‘Gettin Jiggy Wit it!’ The instructors make the classes challenging yet fun. You can’t help but feed off the energy from the music, instructors, and fellow members. Everyone tries their best and it’s great to see.

What is something about yourself that we might not know?

I’m a geek that likes to write fictional, horror and-sci-fi stories.

What advice would you give to someone new to the gym?

Just show up, try your best and have fun. Each class is only a half hour long and you get so much out of it. You will get lots of encouragement from the instructors and members.  It will become habit forming.  NDB will get you on the fitness track!

Where did you grow up?
I grew up and still currently live in Billerica!

What do you do when you are not at the gym?
When I’m not at the gym, I love to be outdoors! A few of my favorite outdoor activities include taking my dog for a walk or hike, going to the beach and hanging out by the pool!

What was your fitness regime before joining NDB Fitness?
I’ve been a gym class junkie for many years now, so before NDB I often took a variety of workout classes mixed with some of my own weight lifting and cardio workouts. However, NDB introduced me to a new variety of classes which I love and have incorporated into my new routine!

When did you become a member at NDB Fitness?
Right when the world finally opened back up after our first COVID shut down. It was such a relieve to become a part of such a wonderful community after so much time in isolation and lock down.

What about the gym keeps you coming?
There’s nothing like that post-workout feeling!

What is your favorite workout/movement?
I love deadlifts and anything lower body. I must be a glutton for punishment!! 😂

What is your least favorite workout/movement?
Burpees for sure!

What is one thing you have done at the gym that you never thought you would/could?
Pull up’s! The motivation and support of the instructors and fellow gym members have allowed me to push myself and make so many accomplishments I never would have done on my own.

What is your next fitness related goal?
I want to continue to build more muscle and push myself to new levels!

What motivates you during a workout?
A good playlist!

What is something about yourself that we might not know?
I was a dancer (ballet, jazz, hip hop, lyrical – you name it!) for about 15 years growing up.

What advice would you give to someone new to the gym?
Don’t be afraid to try something new! You are capable of pushing yourself to such great heights.

⭐️ June 2022: Tim Canning!!!!! ⭐️

Where did you grow up?

I grew up in Billerica with 5 brothers and 3 sisters.

What do you do when you are not at the gym?

When I am not at the gym I enjoy eating out and spending time with my friends.

What was your fitness regime before joining NDB Fitness?

I worked out once or twice a week when I had time at a gym in Dracut near where I worked.

When did you become a member at NDB Fitness?

2017, I met Frank when he was manning a table at the Kennedy School Christmas Craft Fair. I joined shortly after.

What about the gym keeps you coming?

I like the people and I enjoy making it fun.

What is your favorite workout/movement?

I like hammer curls and pushups, I enjoy all the preparations for the Spartan races. I have really enjoyed spending time with everyone.

What is your least favorite workout/movement?

I don’t like doing burpees and I can’t run to save my life.

What is one thing you have done at the gym that you never thought you would/could?

I never could have imagined doing the Spartan Races.

What is your next fitness related goal?

I want to lose another 25lbs.

What motivates you during a workout?

I like to have fun and hope everyone around me is having fun as well.

What is something about yourself that we might not know?

I volunteered as a Coach for Billerica Youth Soccer and although I don’t coach anymore, I still volunteer when they ask. I recently
spent the day at the state fields working as a field marshall for the Commissioner’s Cup Tournament.

What advice would you give to someone new to the gym?

I would tell any new member to take it slow and don’t give up!

Where did you grow up?

Tom-Tewksbury
Yvette – Tewksbury and Amherst NH

What do you do when you are not at the gym?

Tom-Golfing, fishing and splitting wood
Yvette – Golfing, gardening, fishing

What was your fitness regime before joining NDB Fitness?

Tom-Restaurant food specials and a bottle of wine.
Yvette – Does sleeping count??

When did you become a member at NDB Fitness?

Tom & Yvette -February 22

What about the gym keeps you coming?

Tom-My improving fitness level, and the challenge I set for myself to become healthier!
Yvette – The transformation in my body and mind!!

What is your favorite workout/movement?

Tom- DB Chest flys
Yvette – any AB workout and kettlebell snatch

What is your least favorite workout/movement?

Tom- Anything shoulders, surgical limitations
Yvette – Push ups and pull-ups

What is one thing you have done at the gym that you never thought you would/could?

Tom- Kickboxing and yoga
Yvette- Push ups

What is your next fitness related goal?

Tom- Drop another 40lbs
Yvette – Start rock climbing again!!!

What motivates you during a workout?

Tom & Yvette -The positive atmosphere and the support from everyone working out!

What is something about yourself that we might not know?

Tom- I was an EMT and I am a certified massage therapist
Yvette – I love doing stained glass and anything Harry Potter!!

What advice would you give to someone new to the gym?

Tom & Yvette- Keep coming, try harder each time and if an exercise is not working for you ask the trainer about it, they are really good at switching it up to help you get the most from the movement.

Dad of 3 under 9 – so I’m their uber, chef, and butler

I didn’t really have one for the past few years

What about the gym keeps you coming?

⭐️ Workouts – always different. I always had a hard time keeping myself interested b/c I would do the same boring work-outs.

⭐️ People – A+ group of people from both instructors to members. I really enjoy the comradery. Looking forward to Bone Frog w/ this group!

⭐️ My kids – Not b/c I want to be healthy for them…I’m not that sappy, but b/c they would crucify me if I quit and they couldn’t go back to NDB for “gym parties”

What is your favorite workout/movement?

Wednesday AMRAP and Frank’s Friday workouts

What is your least favorite workout/movement?

Monday Leg Day is awful but necessary

What is one thing you have done at the gym that you never thought you would/could?

Pull-Ups & Box Jumps – I can actually do reps now!

What is your next fitness related goal?

I am going to complete the Spartan Trifecta this year

What motivates you during a workout?

Results – I stuck w/ the plan that Frank and the team at NDB laid out and the results speak for themselves (pre-workout also helps to motivate at 4:50am)

What is something about yourself that we might not know?

I used to hike in the White Mountains a lot. Now that I’m back into shape, I plan on bagging some more 4K footers and hopefully get Washington again

What advice would you give to someone new to the gym?

Stick to the plan and put in the work – results will follow. You have a team of instructors and members that will back you up (also – eat your vegetables).

What keeps me going is results and hard work the staff and people are awesome

What is your favorite workout/movement?

Favorite workout is chest / Biceps and triceps

What is your least favorite workout/movement?

I really don’t have a least favorite workout I’m always up for a challenge

What is one thing you have done at the gym that you never thought you would/could?

Bootcamp and kick boxing never thought I could hack it but I now love it

What is your next fitness related goal?

Making it through the bull frog challenge always wanted to do an obstacle challenge

What motivates you during a workout?

I’m always motivated during a workout because I know hard work pays off . The gym does not lie !!!

What is something about yourself that we might not know?

That I never give up I’m a go getter and I set goals

What advice would you give to someone new to the gym?

I would tell them to work hard and you will get results. NDB will get you results as long as you put the work in the staff and people will always cheer you on so you can achieve your goal.

⭐️ February 2022: Ellen Edwards Davidson!!!!⭐️

Where did you grow up?

I grew up in New York but wandered through Colorado for a few years before ending up in the Boston area which has been my home for over 40 years!

What do you do when you are not at the gym?

I am a Physical Therapist for the Andover Public Schools working with students with disabilities from age 3 to 22. Then I go home and read and relax, travel when I can and get together with friends. I love to go out to eat – making working out more urgent!

What was your fitness regime before joining NDB Fitness?

I had been a member of a private boot camp, then a Cross Fit and then tried Orange Theory. Then…my life had some significant changes and then Covid happened. Everything stopped and I had NO fitness regime. My body, my mental health, my mobility all took a very bad hit. I was 40 pounds overweight, achy with no flexibility and pretty down.

When did you become a member at NDB Fitness?

I read about the 16 week Challenge in November 2020 and decided I needed to make a change-it was essential. This seemed like a good way to start. I was really nervous but wow! Such a good decision!

What about the gym keeps you coming?

I cannot say enough about the trainers, the members and the variety of workout each week. And the laughs, camaraderie and the RESULTS! This is a small gym that offers big results. Each trainer knows who you are, what you are capable of and where modifications need to be made. The classes are small so you really do get some individual attention.

Everyone motivates everyone. I have lost 40 pounds, 3 clothing sizes, and feel great. When someone asks me to do something active, I don’t need to hesitate. I was beginning to have difficulty doing my job as a PT with children. Now I’m able to run, skip, hop, jump and exercise with them throughout the day. What a difference NDB has made in my life both personally and professionally.

What is your favorite workout/movement?

I really enjoy every workout. I like that one workout may concentrate on strengthening, another day cardio, sometimes a mix of both. Each trainer is different but effective. So every workout is different. I never get bored or feel like I’m overworking in one area.

What is your least favorite workout/movement?

Easy one: Burpees, burpees, burpees.

What is one thing you have done at the gym that you never thought you would/could?

Kickboxing. What a fun workout! And now I’m trying pilates.

What is your next fitness related goal?

I just had my hip replaced in October. I’d been a member for a year prior to the surgery and recovery was so easy – because I was in shape and strong. I was able to return to the gym in 6 weeks! My fitness goal is to get back to my previous strength and endurance and actually improve on my mobility and capacity for all activities. Before NDB, my hip held me back due to pain. My weight and inactivity held me back due to poor endurance. Now I want to be able to do whatever I want and move with ease.

What motivates you during a workout?

I don’t want to go back to my old self. I so love how I feel and want to remain as fit and able as I can be as I move further into my senior years. I want to retire and have all the energy and mobility I need to travel, enjoy and stay healthy. Did I mention that I turned 67 in December? I don’t feel it thanks to NDB.

What is something about yourself that we might not know?

Hmmmmm…..I love fried chicken and barbeque…a very dangerous passion!
I love having parties and entertaining friends.

What advice would you give to someone new to the gym?

Start small but start. Don’t think that anyone is judging or thinking you don’t belong. Laugh. Be kind to yourself. Ask questions and ask for help when you need it. Mostly, one day at a time. Make the commitment and just keep coming – trusting that results will happen and you will feel so much more in control, happy and healthy. And know you made a good decision to start here!

What was your fitness regime before joining NDB Fitness?

I didn’t really have one, after having my first daughter I had a hard time getting back into a routine working out.

When did you become a member at NDB Fitness?

2018

What about the gym keeps you coming?

How welcoming other members & trainers are. I’ve gained a lot of friendships over the past few years at NDB which makes the classes a lot of fun.

What is your favorite workout/movement?

Favorite workout is definitely a Frank special 🤣

What is your least favorite workout/movement?

Least favorite very close tie between superman’s and any type of lunge

What is one thing you have done at the gym that you never thought you would/could?

I never thought I could do a Spartan race. Ran my first one in November and was able to actually complete 17/20 obstacles

What is your next fitness related goal?

I have 10lbs to lose to be back at pre baby weight from both of my girls

What motivates you during a workout?

I look forward to every workout, it’s like meditation for me. It helps clear my mind. All I’m focusing on is whatever exercise I’m doing and breathing.

What is something about yourself that we might not know?

Besides my full time job, I do outreach work with at risk high school kids.

What advice would you give to someone new to the gym?

Don’t give up before you even try even if it seems hard, you’ll be amazed at what you can actually do. And stick to the plan.
